I know this is a nice problem to have, but there are just so many games that 2022 has thrown up that deserve awards at the end of the year. It has been a monstrously good year for video games, especially if you like Japanese games, and The DioField Chronicle is YET ANOTHER one.
This game is beautiful and amazing. It’s a tactical RTS with a pausable combat system, giving you plenty of control over the action. It seems to have a great plot and wonderful characters, and it looks absolutely gorgeous. It is not to be missed, and with a demo out now you’ve got no reason to avoid giving it a go.
Very much looking forward to The DioField Chronicle. It seems like a spiritual successor to the Growlanser series, which pioneered this kind of pausable real-time combat RPG on consoles starting with the first one on PS1. In the West, we got Growlanser 2 and 3 on PS2 as “Growlanser Generations” from Working Designs, as well as Growlanser 4 on PSP as “Growlanser: Wayfarer of Time” and the PS2 game Growlanser 5 on PS3 as “Growlanser: Heritage of War” from Atlus. Then Atlus shifted Growlanser’s developers over to things like Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor, which was admittedly a very good thing, but which came at the expense of more Growlanser. If you guys get an interview with Lancarse, definitely ask about Growlanser’s influence.
