A new trailer for Lies of P has landed, highlighting bits of gameplay and the narrative. Inspired by Pinocchio and set during the “Belle Epoque Era” (late 19th century through to WW1 in the 20th century), this is one of the most impressive-looking soulslikes from a developer outside of FromSoftware.
The main intriguing hook of this one does have to do with the motif of lying within the Pinocchio story. The lies you tell on your quest will affect how the narrative turns out. The quest system is even “procedural” based on where you’re at with the lying journey. Now, I’m at the point where I’m inherently cautious of anything procedural, as the randomised content is usually at odds with efforts to build a cohesive and coherent narrative and atmosphere, but I’m willing to give it a chance here.
We’re also promised a unique approach to skills and character development, as you are playing as a doll, and therefore liberated from the constraints of flesh & bone. Who knows how that will play out, but it is all genuinely looking good.
The game releases later this year on PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and PC via Steam.
